HITECH – what is this and how does it affect you?

HITECH, or the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, is a portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.  On February 17, 2009, ARRA (aka the Stimulus Bill) was signed into law by the federal government. Included in this law is $19.2 Billion (of the $787 Billion total) which is intended to be used to increase the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) by physicians and hospitals. This portion of the bill is called the HITECH Act. To receive monetary incentives, practices must meet the criteria defined within Meaningful Use.

Physicians seeing Medicare patients can receive up to $44K over the course of five years.  An additional 10% is available to physicians operating in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
